Happy New Year?!

2021 whizzed by so fast that it still hasn’t really sunk in for me that it is a new year already. I honestly have no idea where the year went. In some ways though, that’s not such a bad thing. 2021 wasn’t great for a number of reasons.

But with every ending comes a new beginning (this is a favourite mantra of mine - thanks Adriene), and I am certainly looking forward to the fresh start, and renewed focus that tends to come with a new year. Well thats what I am hoping for anyway.

So here's to a happy, and hopeful, new year!

The New Years goal that did stick

I gave up on the big, traditional, New Years resolutions years ago. I was never very good at keeping them anyway. Is anyone?!

However, in January 2019 I committed to a 30 day at home yoga journey. Here I am 2 years later, still practising every day.

Why do I think this goal stuck?

  • I started small, tackling one month at a time.

  • I chose something that worked with my schedule, and that I could easily do daily. It didn't take long for the practice to become habit.

  • I remained flexible. I was OK with showing up on the mat for only 5 minutes, or an hour.

It’s easy to get caught up in this pressure to reflect on the year that was, your achievements, learnings, and list the ways in which you should to "better" yourself. But this can be super overwhelming, and honestly not helpful.

So this is a gentle reminder to go easy on yourself, especially coming out of the year we just had, and do what works for you.

What works for me is keeping it simple, and building. So this year I am focusing on:

  • Continuing with my daily yoga practice.

  • Continuing to read every day, even if I only manage a page.

  • Continuing with my transition to a vegan lifestyle, starting with Veganuary.

  • Consuming even less, ensuring that I ask myself questions before committing to buy (e.g. do I really need this? Could I make it, or buy it secondhand?).

  • Dedicating more time to my love of sewing.

  • Dedicating more time to learning German (I have lived in Munich for a year now, so it's probably time I learnt more than just the basics).

  • GETTING BACK HOME TO OZ!

Looking for your next read?

Getting lost in a book is a great way to kick off the new year (anytime really). So I thought I would point you in the direction of one of my earlier posts, Twelve books on ethical & sustainable fashion to dive into this Spring/Summer, where I share some of my favourite books on ethical and sustainable fashion that I have read over the past fews years.

Let me know what you think of my list, and your recommendations too. I am always on the hunt for that next book!

Where to buy? Why not skip Amazon, and try World of Books (or WOB for short). They have a huge range of great condition second hand books, are B Corp certified, and offer free shipping. What more could you want?!
